A Mediterranean concoction of two of your favorite "Black" bands (Sabbath/ Lips), ABJ represents the future of heavy psych'n'roll from an isolated, ancient civilization. Combining the ruthless elements of American outlaw roots music and celestial glam rock, like fellow deconstructionists Demon's Claws, "LP" suggests the Rolling Stones at their wearied best, with the electrifying hi-jinks of Brian Eno bulldozing the swagger into the darkest corners of the cosmos. Dynamics play equally as heavy a role as their expert songwriting, and a flawless production job by John Vulgaris rounds this album out with a fresh level of psycho-sonic Alex Chilton-esque throb, heavily peppered with lazy Hazelwood-isms. "LP" presents a long, gooey segue from rave-up to release with breathtaking results, like the best love-making of your life.

Two long-lost little ditties from Athens trippiest troupe ACID BABY JESUS. Originally slated for release as bonus tracks on a Japanese edition of the "Selected Recordings" CD, these songs have now materialized on the 7" format. Familiarity is key here, as these were working versions of two of the "Selected" tunes: "Amalia" was eventually realized as "Night of Pan," and is presented here in all of its gooey, exotic glory with completely alternate lyrical content, and what eventually became known as "Ayahuasca Blues" appears now as "Hermit" with identical lyrics applied to a shakier, and arguably sexier, beat.

Representing the primitivism of Athens, Greece, steadily fornicating with the modern humps of the most ancient civilizations hitherto, Acid Baby Jesus has finally assembled a collection of recordings from their past two years on the rotation. The experiments on Selected Recordings were formulated while spending many of those moments on a secluded island in the Mediterranean sea, populated by a(n) (r)evolutionary cast of travelers, all starving for an heady atmosphere and a delicious salad. Many records were played on record players at these assemblages. And many songs were written, and fine tuned, and recorded. Chrissy "Zebby" Tembo, Zambias filthiest lord of feedback & fuzz and king of their Zamrock movement, is the lone artist who made it to cover status with his song "Trouble Maker," summing up what ABJ has been reaching for. It's never been timelier. Or has it? Every other track is an original - rubbery, and stretching out further than on previous releases. Such is the result from not setting out to record an album while youre hanging out in Heaven. Guitar lines may or may not be backwards. Conventional in their basic rocknroll foundation, these tracks are steeped in layers of organ, Jew's harp, bongos, gongs and a nice assortment of other instruments of the onomatopoeic persuasion. The single "Vegetable" is a heavily percussive fuzz beater, pushing its way out of a lake of slithering psychedelic clangor and barely escaping. Selected Recordings compiles primal Anatolian dance rhythms not far off from the jungliest bounce of Bo Diddley, and produced like a quadraphonic Les Paul album played on an improperly calibrated turntable. Avoiding the echo box and lava lamp cliches of the brand of "psych" that is omnipresent on the scene today, it is safe to say that true psychedelia abounds here.
