The German instrumental duo SANKT OTTEN, founded in 1999, consists of Stephan Otten (drums, programming, synthesizer) and Oliver Klemm (guitar, synthesizer, piano), and has been releasing on Denovali Records since 2009. Their eighth album ENGTANZ DEPRESSION (engl.: CLOSE DANCE DEPRESSION) expresses a significant progression of their material on the preceding album trilogy (Gottes Synthesizer, Sequencer Liebe, Messias Maschine). New drum sounds and acoustic instruments such as harmonium and piano may be found, and some pieces emerged from free improvisations, which is a completely new approach taken by this band.

GOTTES SYNTHESIZER continues this way into synths heaven. A paradise of warm analogue sounds, sequencer lines and electric drums garnished with the typical soaring guitar drones of OLIVER KLEMM as the red line of the album. With ingredients reminding of the german pioneers of progressive electronic music Sankt Otten are moving the Krautrock elements into a new context. With "Fast neu ist auch gebraucht" the full length includes an homage to the old Krautrock heroes NEU! just as a ROBERT FRIPP influenced 13 minutes monster piece like the title track Gottes Synthesizer. Other songs ("Die Welt ist ja nicht zum aushalten" or "ich verlasse mich selbst") are rather influenced by STEPHAN OTTENs energetic electric drums. Mellow epic ambient hymns like "Wir sind deine Propheten" or "Das Ende vom Lied" are their great instrument to create a connection between specific soundscapes to make a coherent album out of the single tracks. The main excellence of this full length is that SANKT OTTEN are combining influences of an old genre with elements of todays music to a new interesting mixture. Sankt Otten do not disappoint. Founded in 1999, the duo from Osnabrreleases since 2009 on Denovali. With their 11th release, they give us a gem of timeless instrumental music. The holy trinity of krautrock, ambient and contemporary electronica, but always sophisticated and unique Sankt Otten. The mastering of the album was made by New York-based Rafael Anton Irisarri. Also the cover layout shows their great taste once again. This outstanding punch artwork was created by graphic designer Daniel Castrejn.

On one of their live shows Sankt Otten met HARALD GROSSKOPF, drummer of ASHRA (as well as appearing on albums of KLAUS SCHULZE). This day wasnt only the starting point for the collaboration with Grosskopf on the track 'Wenn ein Masterplan keiner ist', but furthermore motivated Sankt Otten to invite other musicians to contribute to their 2013 release. All but the eponymous track "Messias Maschine" feature remarkable guest musicians from different generations and musical backgrounds, resulting in an especially varied album. Participating musicians are JAKI LIEBEZEIT (CAN), ULRICH SCHNAUSS, COLEY DUANE DENNIS (Maserati) and CHRISTOPH CLOSER (BOHREN & DER CLUB OF GORE) among others. For the artwork of Messias Maschine Spanish artist SALUSTIANO again borrowed Sankt Otten some of his significant paintings. The whole release is a wonderful masterpiece of electronic music. By mixing the unique melancholy of Sankt Otten with ingredients of contemporary synth-music and the heritage of German pioneers of progressive electronic music, the band is moving KRAUTROCK into 2013. Sankt Otten are extremely proud having convinced legendary CAN-drummer JAKI LIEBEZEIT to collaborate. Jaki, this 75-year old "Human Drum Machine" joined with his mantric and experimental beats on three tracks. The recording sessions reconfirmed what Jaki's fellow band member HOLGER CZUKAY once said: "Jaki plays like a machine. Just better." Another album highlight is the appearance of ULRICH SCHNAUSS, who added some of his distinctive synth layers and percussion to the title 'Im Himmel angekommen'. Furthermore, theremin maestro MILES BROWN of THE NIGHT TERRORS from Australia joined the cooperation and played a haunting melody on a 7/8 beat of Stephan Otten's unique electronic drumming.

Their new record starts with Das endg Scheitern der Melancholie (en.: the final failure of melancholy), which seems to be unfamiliar due to its euphoric mood, but also shows that Sankt Otten consequently develop their music in a sovereign way. The title track Zwischen Demut und Disco (en.: Between humility and disco) then particularly brings to the fore the duo's admiration of analog synthesizers - timeless instrumental music without nostalgic flashbacks to the past. Warm electronica, human being and machine hand in hand, infused by an almost danceable beat who induces head-nodding. On their LP Messias Maschine (2013) Sankt Otten already released three tracks with drum-legend JAKI LIEBEZEIT (CAN) who meanwhile passed away. While sifting old recordings an unreleased drum-recording by Liebezeit emerged. Based on that hypnotic rhythm the melancholic but driving track Wir sind die Guten (en.: we are the good ones) came into existence. Shedding some tears is surely appropriate and allowed. Sad music can make you happy. But also friends of the more pad-oriented compositions of Sankt Otten get their money's worth. Die Ballade vom salonfhigen Zynismus (en.: the ballad on the presentable cynicism) and Ein bisschen Mitschuld bringt dich nicht gleich um (en.: a bit of complicity won't kill you) both are sugar-sweet and snuggling, but at the same time almost threatening. The album closes with the more than 14-minute long Der Abend ist gelaufen (en.: the evening is all over), where the particularly powerful but always minimal-repetitive drumplay by Stephan Otten stands out, while Oliver Klemm's typical ebow-guitar-drones bring the track to float. The lovingly chosen track-titles are again located in aphorism, sarcasm and pun, while the musical quality of the tracks is also absolutely homogen. It's not easy to highlight particular tracks but one could fall in love with each of them. Altogether a jewel for admirers of the 80's sounds and German electronic music. Zwischen Demut und Disco (en.: Between humility and disco) is the holy trinity of krautrock, ambient and contemporary electronics, but always stylistically confident and unmistakeably Sankt Otten.

Based on that hypnotic rhythm the melancholic but driving track Wir sind die Guten (en.: we are the good ones) came into existence. Shedding some tears is surely appropriate and allowed. Sad music can make you happy. But also friends of the more pad-oriented compositions of Sankt Otten get their money's worth. Die Ballade vom salonfhigen Zynismus (en.: the ballad on the presentable cynicism) and Ein bisschen Mitschuld bringt dich nicht gleich um (en.: a bit of complicity won't kill you) both are sugar-sweet and snuggling, but at the same time almost threatening. The album closes with the more than 14-minute long Der Abend ist gelaufen (en.: the evening is all over), where the particularly powerful but always minimal-repetitive drumplay by Stephan Otten stands out, while Oliver Klemm's typical ebow-guitar-drones bring the track to float. The lovingly chosen track-titles are again located in aphorism, sarcasm and pun, while the musical quality of the tracks is also absolutely homogen. It's not easy to highlight particular tracks but one could fall in love with each of them. Altogether a jewel for admirers of the 80's sounds and German electronic music. Zwischen Demut und Disco (en.: Between humility and disco) is the holy trinity of krautrock, ambient and contemporary electronics, but always stylistically confident and unmistakeably Sankt Otten.
